Colchester Halloween House

We are really into Halloween at our Colchester, house.

Not only do we decorate our house, we put the trick into "Trick or Treat" on Halloween Night.

We don't scare small children when they come by, but everyone else is fair game.

We have been known to use air cannons, smoke machines, tree stands, jumping spiders, zip line monsters and more.
I won't tell you what we're going to do this year, it would ruin the surprise.

Hiking Day Pond in Colchester Connecticut

(Day Pond Picnic Area)

Day Pond in Colchester CT, is one of the best hikes in the area. If you combine the north loop and the south loop it's about 2.57 miles. Terrain is varied, with a lot of ups and downs. Good boots are recommended. The trails are mostly well marked, but care must be taken. There are several paths, roads and power lines not marked on the map provided by the state.

During the primary hunting season (October - December) it is a good idea to wear fluorescent orange.

Fishing Red Cedar Lake September 22nd

I had a break in my calendar and went fishing this morning. I went to Red Cedar Lake in Lebanon, CT. The early morning was dead calm and the temperature was a comfortable 57 degrees. The lake has definitely gotten colder, but not pain full wading out to launch the kayak. Fishing was not good. By 9 am I had only had a one fish hooked. A small pickerel that got off before I got him to the boat. Then I got a real estate call and decided to go home. Fishing my way back I caught 4 bass. One about 9" and the others were 12-13". Two of the fish were caught on on a Yamamoto Senko and the others on a Yamamoto Creature.

What I Have Learned

When I was first approached about writing on a blog site I had the usual first response, “What do I write about?” I got the usual response, “You’re a Realtor, write what you have learned.” Well I did learn a lot of stuff to get the Realtor’s license and I am still learning every day on how to do the job well. But in 50 years, I’ve learned a lot of other stuff.

I have learned that the danger involved in knocking down a white faced hornets nest is only slightly lessened when you do it at night.

I have learned that when someone says we need to talk, it's going to be a bad day.

I have learned that putting a climbing tree stand on a tree with poison oak can make you sick.

I have learned that putting a climbing tree stand on a smooth barked tree is not a good idea.

I have learned that taking a nap in a tree stand is a very, very bad idea.

I have learned that when a girlfriend says you don’t want to know what’s wrong, you really, really don’t want to know.

I have learned that when your car engine overheats, it is NOT a good idea to open the radiator cap to see if there is any coolant in there.

I have learned that there are some girls you don’t walk away from, you run as fast as you can.

I have learned that it is hard to hold a pickerel and they have a LOT of sharp teeth.

I have learned that you don’t hunt with people who find out if their safety is on, by pulling the trigger.

Bass Fishing Amston Lake September 14th

Between work, coaching soccer and bad weather it has been a while since I went fishing. I didn't plan on going today, but I woke up early this morning and went. I was planning on going to Red Cedar Lake, but that ment I would have to drive by the High School at the same time as the buses arrive. So I decided to go to Amston Lake instead. I caught 4 small bass and one 17" long. Not a lot of fish, but it was a great day to be out in the kayak. I tried a "Ribbit" frog for a couple of hours. I had a couple of hits, but didn't hook anything. Once again, the fish were caught on the Senko.

Kayak Lessons In Colchester Ct

This is such a great hobby I can’t understand why everyone does not own a kayak. I really enjoy my kayaks. Yes, I have more than one, but not as many as some. I know someone that has somewhere between 14-17 kayaks. I have only 3, but my wife just doesn’t understand my need.

Right now, I have a great fishing kayak (Wilderness Pongo), a good river kayak (Clearwater Designs Nunu) and a general recreation kayak (Perception Spirit). Each of these boats is good for some things and not so good for others.

What kind of boat is perfect for you, it depends. It depends on your size, where you’re going to kayak, how much stuff you want to take with you, etc. The Pongo was my third attempt at finding the perfect fishing kayak. River kayaking is a world apart from lake kayaking; they use different kayaks and paddles.

If your want kayak lessons, want to talk about equipment or where to go (in the Colchester area), write me at stevehoward@prudentialct.com. The season is almost over, but it is a great time to buy a new or used boat!

Fishing Red Cedar Lake August 28th

Today I fished Red Cedar lake in Lebanon, CT. Fishing was slow with bites that I could not catch, probably small fish. I caught a couple small fish and a couple of medium size bass. Fishing got much better when I started using hula grubs. I caught a total of 11 fish, most of them 11-13" bass. The rain was supposed to hold off to 2pm, but it started around 10am. I didn't have a raincoat, but I hoped it was going to stop. By 11am I decided that it wasn't going to stop and went home.

Kayaking the Farmington River August 25th

Alex and I took his friend Zak to the Farmington River for a kayak trip. We had a great time creek bashing, chasing ducks/geese and the boys tried out the rope swing. It was Zaks first time white water kayaking and he made it without tipping over.

Fishing Lake WIlliams August 24th

This morning I fished Lake Williams in Lebanon, CT. I arrived before dawn and was surprised to find a breeze on the lake. Conditions were not ideal but I was able to catch 8 fish before I had to leave. I caught a few small perch, pickerel and 4 good (11-13") bass. They were not interested in the senkos today. I ended up catching the fish on a tequila colored power worm.

This property is for sale at Lake Williams. It is a house with beach rights.

Red Cedar Lake Fishing August 18th

I took a friends son fishing yesterday to Red Cedar Lake. He loves to fish, but his family is not into it. I let him use one of my kayaks and he did very well for the first time kayaking. He caught 2 bass and I caught 8. I used a combination of Yamamoto Senko and a double tailed grub. He used a single tailed grub. It was a pretty good trip considering it was so hot and windy.

Fishing Amston Lake August 14th

Friday, August 12th I was able to spend some time fishing Amston Lake. I had to quit early and do some real estate work. The fish weren't aggressive, but they were biting. I caught a 17" and 9 other smaller bass. I tried other worms, but the only bites I got were on the Senkos. With this weeks warmer weather the fishing seems to have let off. It has been a wierd weather season and the fish don't seem to be following their regular patterns or in the usual spots. Oh well, that's fishing for you.

This house is for sale at Amston Lake. Let me know if you'd like to look at it.

Uncas Lake and Norwich Pond August 12th

I took some time off on Wedneday, the 12th and went to Uncas Pond and Norwich Lake. I fished Uncas Pond from 5:30 to 11:30 had some lunch and then fished Norwich Pond. For the amount of time I spent there I did not catch many fish. At Uncas I caught 5 small bass from 5 - 9 " long. This seems to be a "no Senko zone". I have never caught a fish at these 2 lakes with a Yamamoto Senko. I tried everything in the boat and the only thing that worked was the Zoom U-Tail.

Norwich pond only gave up 4 fish but they were all bigger. I hooked a big 4+ pounder and the first thing he did was to go under a submerged log and hide in the lilly pads. I had to hold the pole with one hand, try to paddle the kayak with the other hand. I managed to paddle the kayak around the log and keep tension on the line long enough to catch the fish. It was 21" long with a girth of 12". That fish made my day and made the whole trip worthwhile. The other 3 bass were 13 - 15" long.

This house is for sale at Uncas Lake. Let me know if you are interested.

Red Cedar Lake August 11th

August 11th I went fishing in the afternoon. I started aroung 5pm and fished until it got so dark I couldn't see the line any more. I caught a cople of pickerel in the middle of the lake and caught a couple of bass furhter down the lake. About 6pm the jet skiers and water skiers came out and the fish stopped biting. I fished the fringe of the lake without luck until just before dark. I don't know if it was a coincidence but it was at this time the water skiers quit for the night too. I ended up with 9 fish, all but the first 2 were bass. The bass were all in the 11-13" range and they were all caught on Yamamoto Senkos of various colors.

Fishing Lake Williams August 8

I finally got to go fishing yesterday. The condo closing was on Friday, it was a very hard sale. I went to Lake Williams (Lebanon, CT) on a beautiful day. I have never seen it so crowded with fishermen, there must have been 10 other boats on the lake. As far as I could tell, we were all having a bad day. I caught 4 fish, 3 bass and a small pickerel and I lost my spare pair of glasses over the side. I overheard other fishermen complaining that it has been a bad year for Lake William fishing. My bait was the usual Yamamoto Senkos and Zoom U-Tail Worm. Although I tried everything else in the boat including crankbait to no avail

Amston Lake Fishing August 3rd

After fishing Lake Haywood yesterday I decided to treat myself and fish Amston Lake today. The weather was absolutely perfect. The fish were biting, almost too well. I caught 15 bass, 2 perch, 2 sunfish and a pickerel. I had 20 fish caught and released by 8am. The pickerel was 15" and 3 of the bass were 12 - 13" long. Everything else was small. Once again, the Senkos and grubs were the bait of choice. I really hated quitting fishing this morning, but 20 fish is the agreement I made with my family.

Bass Fishing Lake Haywood August 1st

Saturday, August 1st I fished Lake Haywood in Colchester, CT. The boat launch is half a lake away from where the fish are, but at least we can get on the lake. It is very clean and quiet. No gas powered engines allowed on the lake. I usually don’t catch many fish here, and today was no exception. I only caught 6 bass. Four of them were in the 13- 15” range; the other two were 4” and 6” long. I went there for a change of pace and to try out some deep water fishing. All the fish I caught were in shallow (8 -12 feet) water, but I did spend some time in the deep water. I had two hits and actually had a fish on for about 5 seconds. I might actually learn how to catch them in deep water someday.

Bass Fishing Lake Williams July 31st

On Friday, July 31st, I went to Lake Williams. I arrived before sunrise on a cloudy morning. The fishing was pretty good and I caught 13 bass. Once again the fish were interested in the Yamammoto Senkos, fished “wacky style”. I don’t think it looks like anything in the water, but the wiggle thing it does as it sinks drives aggressive fish to grab it. The only question on most days is, what color do I use today? I use blue, red, lime, green and green/white worms most of the time. The fishing came to an abrupt end when the rain that was supposed to come in the afternoon arrived at 10am. I had afternoon office duty at the office anyway.

My Colchester area Lake Evaluations

Babcock Pond, Colchester (119 acres) is a very shallow, weedy, lake. The last time I fished it in 2008 the weeds were within 2” of the surface. I have not been back since.

Bashan Lake, East Haddam (273 acres) is a large clean lake. The boat launch is hard to get to and tucked away in a far corner. The lake is very deep and has a clean bottom. I have not caught many fish there, but I have caught some big bass and pickerel.

Gardner Lake, Salem (529 acres) is a very big lake, too big for me and my kayak. If there is any wind at all, this lake gets too rough for me to fish effectively. I have only fished about 1/16th of the lake, without much success. I mostly ended up with a bunch of tail-less worms. The deep lakes confound me, so I don’t fish them any more.

Lake Haywood, East Haddam (174) is a very nice lake. The boat launch is pretty far from where I like to fish. This is one of the electric motor only lakes, so it is a good place to go on a weekend because you don’t have to worry about jet skis or water skiers. This is a very clean lake with a variable bottom. It ranges anywhere from 2 feet deep to more than 30 feet deep. I find it can be a very difficult place to catch fish, on an average day, I catch 4 – 7 fish, and my high for this lake is 14 fish.

Holbrook Pond, Hebron (83 acres) I only fished once. It was very weedy and shallow and I didn’t catch anything.

Mansfield Hallow Reservoir, Mansfield (460) is a beautiful body of water with some great looking coves and bays. I watched a deer swim across a bay one morning. I have fished it when the reservoir was low and when it was high, but only caught a few fish. Everyone that I have talked to has the same story, big fish if you can find them, but few are caught.

Moodus Reservoir. East Haddam (486) is big, but not very deep. I have not had much success there, but others have. This is another lake that gets very choppy if there is any wind blowing. I don’t fish it very often.

Norwich Pond, Lyme (30acres) I fished for the first time this spring. I caught 3 – 4 fish, but the pond looked like I should have done better. Maybe because the water was still 55 – 60 degrees the fish weren’t active. I will try it out later this summer.

Pickerel Lake, Colchester (82) used to be very weedy. While viewing a property there I noticed that the lake wasn’t weed choked any more. I have fished a few times this year with pretty good success. There are a LOT of pickerel there, quit a few bass and even one big (5lb) bullhead that I caught. There are still a lot of weeds there, but the lake can be fished.

Red Cedar Lake, Lebanon (127) is one of my favorite lakes. It is not very deep, but it has a lot of stump cover. I don’t catch many fish there, but I do get some big ones there. You need to fish weedless or be prepared to loose a lot of tackle. The parking lot is very small. During the summer you’ll need to get there early or there will be no place to park. Weekends can be real busy with jet skies and water skiers.

Savin Lake, Lebanon (49) is small with a varying depth. I used to catch lots of bass there. The last 2 years I have only caught 1 – 2 fish per trip. I have not tried it this year and no one else seems to be fishing it either. I drive by there on my way to Red Cedar and have not seen anyone parked there.

Uncas Lake, Lyme (69acres) is very nice deep lake. It is electric only with a nice shoreline to fish. It is another deep lake that has confounded me. I did have a good day fishing the shoreline with flukes, but only caught a couple the next time I went there.

Lake Williams, Lebanon (272) is my other favorite lake. I go there often and it is almost
always good to me. It is big and mostly shallow. It can be very busy on weekend with jet skies, etc, but there are usually no problems on week days. The car top boat launch is at the dam; naturally the best fishing is at the other end of the lake

Largemouth Bass Fishing Amston Lake July 29th

I fished Amston Lake today and caught 20 fish. There was one perch and the rest were largemouth bass. I had no luck in the lilly pads where I caught the big ones last week, so in desperation I started fishing the shoreline. Most of the fish were small, but I did catch three bass that were 17" long. I used a combination of Yamamoto Senkos and grubs.

Amston Lake July 25th

I fished Amston Lake today. It was a little windy and I have lost my anchor. I wasn't able to set up the way I would like to, for the big fish. So I hit the areas that were out of the wind and also did some drift fishing. I was able to catch 20 fish, mostly bass with a couple of pickerel and perch thrown in. I used a combination of Yamamoto Senkos and grubs to catch most of the fish. I caught one 15" bass and everything else was small (6 - 11").

Pickerel Lake Colchester CT July 24th

July 24th my neighbor (John) and I went fishing at Pickerel Lake. The weather was good, but the fishing could have been better. I caught 7 fish on various soft bait and John caught 6. His catch included a good size largemouth and a big smallmouth. I had the strangest catch of the day and maybe of the year. I caught a 19" bullhead on a grub. It is the first time I have caught one there and the CT Lake guide doesn't list bullheads at Pickerel Lake. It just shows you never know what is in a lake or what the cast will bring you.

6 Pounder at Red Cedar Lake Lebanon CT

It is a good thing that I am a morning person. For the last week the fishing is mostly over by 9am. I do enjoy being up before the birds start chirping and watching the skyline turn pink, yellow and then full daylight. Today I went to Red Cedar Lake in Lebanon, CT. I didn't catch a fish for the first hour and then I caught a 17" bass. The next cast I got one even bigger. He took me for a long ride in my kayak and I had to pull him out from under a underwater stump. But the bass was 21" inches long and had a 16.5 in girth. According to the formula the fish weighed 6 pounds. I "only" caught 11 fish for the day, but I did catch two more 15" bass before I quit for the day. All but one small perch were caught on the Yamamoto Senko. This year, it seems like I am advertising for Gary Yamamoto, but the darn things work.

Amston Lake July 19th Good Fishing

Another great day of fishing. I went to Amston Lake this Sunday, the weather was perfect and the fish were biting. I caught and released 20 fish by 8:30am. Most were in the 11-13" range with one 16" long. I had a 4 to 5 pound bass almost up to the boat before he slipped the hook. The fish were caught on Yamamoto's Senkos and Berkley's Turtleback Worm. The fishing seems to be at peak levels now, I hope I can get out more this week.

Lake Williams July 17th Lebanon CT

Friday, July 17th, I went fishing at Lake Williams in Lebanon, CT. It was a beautiful day, no wind, clear sky and the clean air you get after a hard rain the night before. The fishing was very good. By 9am I had caught 20 fish and per family agreement, I had to go home. About 15 of the fish were 11-13 inch bass, the rest were small bass, pickerel and perch. I caught most of the fish on a Zoom U Tail worm. I bought those years ago, but never used them because they didn’t fit well on a size 1 hook and they were too light to cast. I took them out of retirement now that I am using the jigs. They work really well and it is something I haven’t thrown at these fish before. I’m going to go through my old worms and see what other stuff I can bring out of retirement.

Colchester CT Lake Pickerel July 16

On Thursday I went fishing at Pickerel Lake in Colchester CT. The weather was good, but the fishing was tough. I threw my usual stuff at them, but with little success. By the end of the morning I caught 4 pickerel, 2 perch and 2 bass. One of the bass was 18” long with the fins of an earlier meal sticking out of his gullet. Most of the fish were caught using a Yamamoto Senko.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

On the 13th of July we went to Red Cedar Lake in Lebanon, CT. On this trip my son (Alex)brought one of his friends fishing. Alex caught the first fish of the day and the biggest (17"), so that gives him bragging rights for a while. I did come away with the most fish caught for the day, with 14. Most of the bass I caught were 12-13" range. I also caught a couple perch and a 20" pickerel. I was mainly using a jigged grub retrieved just above the weeds. I have included some photos of me in my kayak.

Fishing Red Cedar Lake Lebanon CT

Red Cedar Lake (Lebanon, CT) was good to me today! I started fishing around 5:15 and had 20 fish by 7:50am. As usual, I was fishing 2 poles. One had a Yamamoto grub and the other had a black/blue laminate senko. I had the grub on a 1/8oz jig. I would throw it out, let it sink and then slowly retrieve it just above the weeds. About 60% of the fish were caught using the grub. Beside the largemouth bass, I caught a couple rock bass and 4-5 small perch. The highlight of the day was an 18” largemouth caught on the grub. I didn’t get a tow from the fish because I was anchored at the time. I don’t have a lot of confidence in those little jig hooks, but it held this fish. These fish were in the middle of the lake today. In a kayak, early weekday mornings are the only time I feel safe being in the middle of a lake that allows power boats.

Pickerel Lake July 6th

What a beautiful morning it was. 61 degrees and no wind at all. I started fishing around 6am. I caught 7 bass and 1 pickerel in an hour and then nothing. They just stopped biting, anything! The fish I did catch were nice fish though. Two of the bass were 17” long and took me and my kayak for a little ride. The rest of the bass were about 13” long. The pickerel was 21” long. I caught all of them on a Yamamoto Senko. For some reason I haven’t caught anything on the Berkley Power Baits. Last year I was about 50/50, but this year it has been 90% Yamamoto.

Lake WIlliams July 5th

I got up early and arrived at Lake Williams before sunrise. The fishing was good and I caught 10 bass within an hour. I caught them on a Yamamoto Kut Tail Worm and a Yamamoto Senko. All the fish were 11-13” long and things were looking real good. Then the wind started blowing 10-15mph and the fishing got bad. I didn’t catch another fish for 3 hours. Even when I got behind an island and out of the wind I didn’t catch anything. I did get a couple of bites but I caught nothing else.

The low point of the day came when I did get 2 bites in one spot. I got set up, dropped my anchor and got a new worm on. Just as I was going to cast a couple of guys in a bass boat cruised right over the spot where the fish were. This is the second time this year at this lake, that someone in a boat drives their boat within 20 yards of me right where I’m casting my line. Does this happen to anyone else, or is it just kayaker’s that get no respect?

Kayaking 4th of July on the Farmington River

(Alex and his kayak)

One of the things my son and I like to do is to go white water kayaking. We just came back from a trip to the Farmington River. We went to Main Stream Canoes and Kayak in New Hartford, CT. From Colchester it takes about one hour to get there. They offer a livery service from their location to Riverton, CT for $20/boat. Depending of how fast the river is running it takes 3 -4 hours to kayak back down the river to the parking area. It is mostly Class I water with an occasional Class II (see my April blog for definitions) rapid thrown in. This section is not for novice kayak/canoe users. Main Stream does suggest the downstream section for novices or people trying out new boats.

My son has one of the new “spud” boat type; I have an old school, “Eskimo” type kayak. His boat can do all kinds of tricks and can do Eskimo rolls. The downside of his boat is that the boat is less stable than mine. It will tip over easier. Mine is hard to tip over, but once it does, it won’t Eskimo roll, so I’ll have to “bail out” and swim.

The river was a little higher than usual which made some parts of the river harder and some easier. We had a great time. We got very wet from wave splashes, but neither of us got flipped over. I think white water kayaking is better than going to Six Flags Amusement Park.

Colchester, Lake Haywood Fishing

On July 3rd I went fishing at Lake Haywood in Colchester CT. I caught 8 fish; 6 largemouth bass, 1 rock bass and one sunfish. The bass were caught on Yamamoto senkos and the others were caught on a jigged grub. The bass were all in the 13 – 15” size range. The weather was great and I wish I didn’t have to go to work this afternoon.

For new readers, I fish from a Wilderness Pongo kayak. It has good length, tracking, an adjustable seat and I have modified it for fishing. I installed 2 fishing pole holders and a console that hold my tackle box, cell phone, needle nose pliers, etc. If you see a blue kayak with a “Prudential Connecticut Realty” decal on it, come over and say hi.

Fishing Amston Lake June 29th

I fished Amston Lake today. The weather went from cloudy and showers to sunny 70 degrees. I started fishing around 6:30 am and caught 20 fish by 11:15am. They were about half pickerel and half largemouth bass with a calico bass thrown into the mix. I had to use a combination of plastic grubs, power worms, diving minnows and shaky worms. All fish were small to average except for one 17” largemouth.

Big Bass at Pickerel Lake, Colchester CT

( Pickerel Lake Boat Launch)

I decided to fish Pickerel Lake in Colchester, CT today. The weather was perfect, 65 degrees and no wind. I did not catch a lot of fish, but I did catch some nice ones. The first two fish I caught were 18-21” pickerel on a swimsenko. The next fish was 15” largemouth, then a 17” bass, another 15” and then a 20” bass took me for a ride. I love it when a big bass pulls my kayak around a lake. I caught another 15 inch bass and then they stopped biting. I ended up catching a couple rock bass, another bass and pickerel. Most of the fish were caught on Yamamoto Senkos

Good June Fishing at Lake Williams, Lebanon CT

Finally got out fishing today, the weather has been so bad lately. I went today even though the forecast was for morning rain. They were right; there was about one hour of drizzle and rain. Lake Williams in Lebanon, CT was my choice today. The fishing was good. It took about six hours to catch 20 fish. Two were pickerel; a bullhead and the rest were bass. One bass was 17”, three were 15” and the rest were 11-13” long. Most were caught on Yamamoto Senkos fished wacky style. I don’t know what that bullhead was thinking!

Fishing Lake Uncas and Norwich Pond

I fished Uncas Lake and Norwich Pond on June 17th. I caught a few (6) small fish along the edge, but nothing in the deeper water. I caught most of the fish on the Berkley minnow grub and lost a big one 19”+ on the swimsenko. I guess I’ll go back to the shallow lakes.
